Welcome to the Learning Library

About the Library

The Learning Library is currently housed at 45-47 North Street, Spennymoor and provides a loan service of toys and specialist equipment to 550 individual families, schools and other groups in:

  • South Durham
  • Wear Valley District
  • Teesdale District
  • Easington District

The Learning Library was originally set up in 1986 from an idea to provide children and young people with special needs an opportunity to borrow suitable toys and specialist equipment to use in their home. We now cater for all ages - babies, children, teenagers and adults.

It started because:

1. Specialist equipment and adapted items are not readily available elsewhere.

2. It is difficult to meet the needs of a person with specialist adapted items or equipment without trying things first.

3. Purchasing of toys or equipment that are not going to be of any use or only short term use can be avoided

4. Advice is needed on how equipment and toys can be adapted for use by people with special needs.
